The Cure to Terrorism

An excellent khutbah given after the terror attacks in Jordan 2005. It makes clear that the cure to extremism, ignorance, terrorism and oppressive takfeer is not simply condemning it again and again.

Rather, it is the spread of knowledge and teachings of the scholars that removes the doubts and subdues the desires.....

-- A Friday Sermon by Saleem Al-Hilali given in the wake of the terrorist bombing that took place in Amman on 11/11/2005
**The Exposed Foreboding**

All praise is due to Allah; we praise Him, seek His aid and ask for His forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from the evils of ourselves and the evils of our actions. Whomsoever Allah guides, none can lead astray and whomsoever Allah leaves to go astray, none can guide.
I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone without a partner and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.

"O you who believe! Fear Allâh (by doing all that He has ordered and by abstaining from all that He has forbidden) as He should be feared. [Obey Him, be thankful to Him, and remember Him always], and die not except in a state of Islâm (as Muslims) with complete submission to Allâh. (Aali Imran 3:102)

O mankind! Be dutiful to your Lord, Who created you from a single person (Adam), and from him (Adam) He created his wife [Hawwa (Eve)], and from them both He created many men and women and fear Allâh through Whom you demand your mutual (rights), and (do not cut the relations of) the wombs (kinship). Surely, Allâh is Ever and All Watcher over you. (An-Nisa 4:1)

O you who believe! Keep your duty to Allâh and fear Him, and speak (always) the truth. He will direct you to do righteous good deeds and will forgive you your sins. And whosoever obeys Allâh and His Messenger (SAW) he has indeed achieved a great achievement ( i.e. he will be saved from the Hell-fire and made to enter Paradise). (Al-Ahzab 33:70-71)

My beloved brothers in the way of Allah!

Allah, the Exalted, the Most High, sent our Messenger (peace be upon him) as a mercy to Mankind.

((We have only sent you as a mercy to the world))

And the Messenger (peace be upon him) said about himself:

"I am a mercy granted (to the world)."

Indeed, Allah put in his heart mercy and as a result the Ummah gathered around him.

((It is by Allah's mercy that you are kind to them. Had you been tough and hard-hearted, they would have dispersed from around you. So pardon them, seek forgiveness for them and consult them in the affairs. Then if you resolve (to do something), put your trust in Allah. Verily, Allah loves those who put their trust in Him)). [Aali Imran: 159]

This is the reality of Islam. And this is the Message of the Chief of mankind Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him):

Mercy is its essence...
Mercy is its logo...
Mercy is its inward and outward...

Yes, mercy is the banner of our Religion. Allah, the Most High, has written to Himself to be Merciful. This is why He enjoined Mercy on His creation and made their mercy to one another an integral part of His mercy.

The Messenger (peace be upon him) said: "Those who are merciful, Allah will have mercy on them. Have mercy on those on earth, the One above the heavens will have mercy on you."

This is why the Messenger (peace be upon him) when he established the ideal exemplary first generation, he gave to the Muslim community the similitude of one body: "The similitude of the Muslims in their mutual love, mercy and care is that of a body: if one part of it suffers an illness, the rest of the body feels for it so they feel fever and sleeplessness. "

He (peace be upon him) gave this similitude in order to clarify to the believers how the Muslim community should be, and therefore, the Muslims are one body - one entity.

If a healthy individual happens to suffer an illness in one part of his body, the rest of the body suffers as a result. If the eye suffers, the ear will consequently suffer and so will the hand, etc. The eye will not be left alone to deal with its illness or pain; rather, the whole body, including all organs and systems, will be on alert to deal with the pain which serves as a threat of a spreading contamination, which if it continues will be fatal. We seek refuge with Allah.

This is why the scholars who are aware of these issues, who can see the roots of the problem and its destructive consequences, say that to feel the pain is a healthy phenomenon. Because when one feels pain, he realizes that there is something that needs to be treated. As a result, the whole body will be on the move to secure remedy to the infected part.

This is the Example of society. When inflicted with a calamity or a tribulation it becomes one hand, helping one another to root out any fitnah that might be there. The expert doctor is one who succeeds in diagnosing the illness assessing the amount of damage, and determining the virus so as to deal with it successfully and correctly.

As to those who can only perceive the external symptoms and fail to see, or turn away from the real problem such people are either short-sighted or ignorant of the affair.

O brothers in Islam! Concerning the criminal deadly bombings that took place in our safe country (Jordan), and I say it loud for all to hear: we have been fighting – and still are - against that and we have been debating those who embrace such concepts - the Takfeeri groups - as did our teachers since 1393 a.h. (1973); 33 years ago.

Yes, we have warned and are still warning against the Takfeeri ideology which transforms misguided youth into potential bombs, which no one knows when and where they will explode.

Some people cannot help wonder why a young man – in the prime of youth - would wear a detonated belt and blow himself up in the middle of old men, children and women; in a wedding, so he kills himself and those around him.

Since Wednesday night, I have been tracking comments (in the media), (in the hope that) perhaps one of the commentators or analysts would point to the source of the illness or point to find the remedy to cure such people who were brainwashed and made to believe they were one step away from Paradise.

Brothers in Islam!

Those who commit such crimes are from us, they speak our language, they have the same skin color as us, they are from our society; yet they have been brainwashed and their heads have been stuffed with deviant methodologies and misguided views.

They consider society to be all unbelievers - both government and people. They apply the Qur'anic verses which talk about the unbelievers on the Muslims. The most dangerous argument of theirs is their understanding of the verse:

((Whoever does not rule by what Allah has revealed, such are the disbelievers) ).

Therefore, they say: Muslim rulers have enforced the British law, the American law, etc. so, they are kuffaar, without understanding the correct meaning of this verse! Indeed, this verse, along with the other two verses in Surah al-Maa'idah, was revealed describing the Jews and the Christians:

((Whoever does not rule by what Allah has revealed, such are the disbelievers) )
((Whoever does not rule by what Allah has revealed, such are the Faasiqoon [rebellious] ))
((Whoever does not rule by what Allah has revealed, such are the ath-Thaalimoon [evil-doers, oppressors]) )

These verses where revealed talking about the Jews and the Christians as Jaabir ibn Abdillaah pointed to Saheeh Muslim.

These takfeeri people are the Khawaarij and their followers, the most evil of creatures since the time of Muhammad (peace be upon him) until they (Khawaarij) follow ad-Dajjaal (the false Messiah). Ibn Umar –may Allah be pleased with him and his father- said:

"They took the verses that were revealed about the unbelievers and applied them on the Muslims."

This is Ibn Abbaas, whom the Messenger (peace be upon him) supplicated to Allah that He grants him knowledge of the Deen, and the interpretation of Qur'an – may Allah be pleased with him - he explained this verse which was used by the Khawaarij in the past, and is used by their like in the present, and will be used by the Khawaarij in the future. He (radiyallaahu anhu) said:

"It is not the type of kufr you refer to, but it is a level less than the other; it is not the type of kufr as when one disbelieves in Allah and the Last Day."

So he made the distinction clear between Major kufr that expels the individual out of the realm of Islam, and Minor kufr, which is sin or ungratefulness, which does not expel the individual out of Islam unless he deems it to be Halaal.

We still refute such people and debate with them to clarify to them that mere ruling by other than what Allah has revealed is not a kufr that drives the Muslim out of Islam. The only case in which such an act becomes Major Kufr is when the person deems it Halaal (permissable) , which is an act of the heart known only to Allah.

In view of that, considering Muslim rulers and laymen to be Kuffaar reflects ignorance of the Religion of Allah. Indeed, it is twofold ignorance about the Call of Muhammad (peace be upon him).

O brothers in Islam!

This is the fact about which the media is heedless and the learned individuals in our society swerve away from it when they address this problem.

How do we solve the problem?

By condemnations and verbal objection alone? No. Such techniques will never be successful in treating this issue. Therefore, the channels of dialogue should be opened for the Du'aats to the Way of Allah, so that they can call those who went astray, to the correct Path with knowledge, proof, evidence and the authority the Qur'ân and Sunnah have. The result will call them to return to the truth, wake up and give up misguidance.

I will cite an example from history and follow it with a contemporary one:

As for the old one, it is when the Khawaarij (Kharijites) rebelled against the then Ruler of the believers, 'Alee bin Abee Taalib — may Allah be pleased with him - the Khawaarij were twelve thousand (12000) then.

Thus, they rebelled against Alee and united upon fighting against him. Then, the Learned of the Ummah and the Interpreter of the Qur'an, Abdullaah bin 'Abbaas, came to Alee and said:

"Give me the permission so that I may debate with them."

and thus he went to them and had a very long debate with them, and let us see its results - eight thousand of the Khawaarij retracted their beliefs and only four thousand remained!!

'Alee — may Allah be pleased with him — along with the Prophet's—peace be upon him — Companions — may Allah be pleased with them --killed those who did not retract in the battle of Nahrawaan, where he ( i.e. 'Alee) routed them (i.e. the Khawaarij). None of them escaped except for eight men, who spread through the countries and preached the Khawaarij ideology—and refuge is to be sought in Allah, the Exalted, from that--.

Thus, when the permission is given to the scholars, who are well-versed in the Qur'an and the Sunnah, in order to call, then one will not see these decayed, misguiding thoughts which destroy our sons:

The criminal is from our sons!
The murdered is from our sons!
The criminal knows not why he committed his crime!
The murdered knows not why he was killed!

As for a contemporary example it is when the blight of the Khawaarij befell Algeria, where the dissenting groups resorted to the mountains and declared war against the Muslim Algerian community. There, I had a debate with them, and at the same time,

I was accompanied by — with the blessings of Allah and His mercy — our Sheikh and Faqeeh of that time, Sheikh Muhammad bin Saalih al-'Uthaimeen — may Allah have mercy on him— so, we debated with them over the phone from nine o'clock at night and until three in the morning, and the result was that four thousand armed men came down from the mountains.

Thus, O brothers of Islam, we should clarify these matters, we should clarify these facts, because these youths have been deceived, misguided, and got their minds distorted by many means; and I shall say it:

The greater of which are the (Takfeeri) internet sites!!

How can al-Qa'ida get to our sons and daughters? Simple, through the internet!

This organization has more than seven hundred and fifty sites over the World Wide Web which preach Takfeer (wrongly charging other Muslims with unbelief), preaching to kill, preach to bomb, and preaching Muslims to kill other Muslims as the latter have "apostatized" (!!)

Thus — O brothers of Islam — all of the words of condemnation and verbal objection will do nothing in solving this blight, and no one will cease to say them; these words are uttered by the scholar and the ignorant; the scholar condemns, the ignorant does so, and we do so, but will this solve the extremism problem?

This is the point — O brothers of Islam --, and we say to them — in the hope that they may stop... retract... wake up...

Listen to what the beloved one, the Prophet — peace be upon him —said:

"The Muslim will be at ease with his religion so long as he does not shed blood unlawfully."

"at ease with his religion" means that seeking his Lord's pardon, and asking for His mercy, unless he kills another Muslim without a cause, thus "if he sheds blood unlawfully, he will cease good deeds".

The Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam) also said:

"Allah refuses to guide to repentance the person who kills a believer."

This means that he who kills the believers, whether men, children, women, or elderly — suddenly and without a lawful cause that legitimizes it — he will not be guided towards repentance.

And this is the final resort for these groups; they charge the Ummah with Kufr, and when they do not find those to charge with Kufr, then they charge one another with Kufr. Rather, one of them—and we seek refuge in Allah from that—charged himself with Kufr when he did not find someone else to charge.

This excessiveness in charging others with Kufr is a chronic disease. It is like cancer which will spread and kill the human being in case the person did not pay attention to it—and we seek refuge in Allah--, and few are those who escape it!

O brothers of Islam we must clarify these things to you so that you clarify them to your children and spread them among your neighbors, open your eyes wide, and open your ears wide against anyone who wants to murder our security, who wants to stir up sedition among us, or who wants to sneak among us all of a sudden and turn our joys into sadness our gatherings into separation.

I invoke Allah, the Exalted, so that He guides us to the Right Path, guides all the Muslims, and guides all the misguided to that which He loves and is pleased with. He is the All-Able of doing that. I seek Allah's forgiveness for you.

The second sermon:

Praised be Allah, and may the peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his household, Companions, and whoever follows his way:

O brothers of Islam! This renegade group —the Khawaarij— who are attacking the Ummah with Takfeer, respect not the ties, either of kinship or of covenant with regard to the believers, and they are the worst blight since the time of the Prophet —peace be upon him— until they follow the Dajjaal.

In this respect, and during the time of the Prophet — peace be upon him — their chief Dhul-Khuwaisirah at-Tameemee came to the Prophet when he peace be upon him — divided the spoils of the battle of Hunain and gave them — in an attempt to attract their hearts — to those who have converted to Islam recently and gave nothing to Quraish or the Ansaar — this man, who had deeply-set eyes, protruding forehead, shaggy hair, and had a sign of Sujood (prostration) [1], said:

"O Muhammad! Be just, because this division is not meant for the sake of Allah".

He is objecting to whom? Against the Prophet — peace be upon him — who is the most just among all the creatures and the best among them. So, why would they not object to those who are less than the Prophet —peace be upon him — in terms of ruling or knowledge? Rather, this is to be done with greater reason.

There, the Prophet — peace be upon him — said:

"Woe to you, who will do justice if I did not? Verily, I am the most knowledgeable of Allah and fearing of Him among you".

Then the Prophet—peace be upon him—said:

"From this very person's posterity there would arise people whom you would belittle your prayer and fasting before theirs; they would recite the Qur'an, but it would not go beyond their throats. If I were to ever find them I would kill them like 'Aad. They are the worst killed ones under the sky. Toubaa (a tree in Paradise) for him who kills them or gets killed by them."

Thus, we hope that those brothers and sisters who got killed in those bombing attacks are to be forgiven by Allah, we invoke Allah, the Exalted, to have mercy on them, admit them to His Jannah, and forgive their sins and mistakes.

Indeed, this is the fruit of Takfeer. I — unfortunately— heard some callers, who are considered among the reliable ones - in view of the laymen - and who are pointed at in the Satellite TV channels — I heard one of them saying unreservedly that the Prophet — peace be upon him— did not kill the Khawaarij and considered them like a sort of opposition party inside the then Muslim country.

Lo! How bad is what they describe! How bad is what they judge! And how bad is what they think!

Look at this hadeeth that was reported along with its chain of narrators by Imaam Ahmad and Abu Ya'laa with an authentic (Saheeh) chain: the Prophet—peace be upon him—passed by Dhul-Khuwaisirah while he was prostrating, and then he came to his Companions and said: "Who would kill him?"

Abu Bakr said: "I would", and thus he drew his sword, shook it in his hand, and went on. There he found him prostrating, and so he came back (without killing him). Rather, he said: "How would I kill a prostrating man, O Prophet of Allah?! 'Umar went on to do the same thing, and came back without doing it for the same reason.

Finally, 'Alee went on, and the Prophet said: "You are the one who would do it if you find him", but 'Alee did not find him. There, the Prophet—peace be upon him—said: "If this man was killed, none among my nation would differ in opinion".

And it was 'Alee who killed him just like the Prophet—peace be upon him— prophecised, and this was in the battle of Nahrawaan, and thus he searched for him among the killed and found him just like the Prophet—peace be upon him—said. He showed him to the Prophet's—peace be upon him—Companions. After that, 'Alee sank to the ground prostrating to Allah for killing that man.

These Khawaarij are divided into two types:

The first are those who have been deceived and misguided in the name of the religious zeal and emotions. The remedy for them is through educational discussion and debate to remove the veil from their eyes.

The second are those who are persistent upon their innovation, sinning in their (misguided) interpretation, and deviated from the Prophetic methodology. The remedy for them is through killing and rooting out.

However, you should know that they (the Khawaarij) will not have an established country, nor will they have power, nor will they have authority over the people of Sunnah and Jamaa'ah. Whenever they form a group, it will be terminated like what Ibn 'Umar said in the Hadeeth in the Sunan Ibn Maajah that the Prophet—peace be upon him—said:

"There will come people who would recite the Qur'an but it would not go beyond their throats. Whenever a generation of them gets rooted out, another one will appear; and this will continue until the Dajjaal comes out in their army."

Thus they establish armies not to fight against the Kuffaar but rather against the Muslims and they are liars, I swear by the Lord of all the creatures.

The Prophet—peace be upon him—said that: "they will kill the people of Islam and leave the idol-worshippers" .

Behold! O brothers! Look at their reality nowadays. Their leaders and theorists left the Muslim countries and lived in the capital of Kufr, London. All of the heads of Takfeer in the Islamic world are cradled in Britain, and you may have heard about a man whose name is Abu Qataadah al-Filisteenee? !

He is from our country, but he left to Pakistan, Afghanistan, and then got the right of asylum in Britain where he declared war against Islam and the Muslims and became one of the main exporters of the Takfeeree ideology to the Islamic countries; but after the bombing attacks of London, the British government decided to extradite him provided that he will not be hurt, prosecuted, nor be punished for that loathsome act, and when they did not win anyone's ear—up to now--, they left him there.

By Allah! They live in London on the monetary aids for the political refugees; they left the Muslim countries and accepted to live among the Kuffaar—and we seek refuge in Allah, the Exalted--.

O brothers of Islam! This is the truth that you did not hear before, and you may not actually hear in the media, I say it seeking the Pleasure of Allah, the Exalted, so we might benefit from it in knowing our way, for we have no other way than going back to the Book of Allah, the Sunnah of His Messenger, and the understanding of our rightly-guided Salaf. Accordingly, we will be shown how the Prophet's Companions understood the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger—peace be upon him--.

I invoke Allah, the Exalted, by His Beautiful Names and Sublime Attributes in order to protect all of the Muslim countries, preserve the safety of our country, and protect us from evil, tribulations, and troubles.

I also invoke Him, the Exalted, in order to guide the Muslim Rulers to that which He loves, show them the Truth and let them follow it, show them the Falseness and keep them away from it, and bestow upon them a good retinue of reliable scholars who will enjoin them with al-Ma'roof, warn them against al-Munkar, and become their supporters for everything good. Verily, He is the All-Able of doing that.

Celebrating the Prophet's "birthday"?

Celebrating the Prophet’s birthday (al-mawlid) is an
innovation, and doing special acts of worship on
this day such as saying tasbeeh and tahmeed,
observing i’tikaaf, reading Qur’aan and fasting is an
innovation for which a person will not receive any
reward, for these are all rejected.

It was narrated from ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be
pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allaah
(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
“Whoever introduces anything into this matter of
ours that is not part of it will have it rejected.”
Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 2550; Muslim, 1718.

According to a version narrated by Muslim (1718)
he said: “Whoever does an action that is not in
accordance with this matter of ours will have it
rejected.”

Al-Faakihaani (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

I do not know of any basis for this mawlid in the
Qur’aan or Sunnah, and there is no report that any
of the scholars of this ummah, who are examples in
matters of religion and adhere to the path of those
who came before, did this. Rather it is an
innovation (bid’ah) which was introduced by those
who have nothing better to do, and it is a means for
them to have fun and eat a lot.

Al-Mawrid fi ‘Aml al-Mawlid, quoted in Rasaa’il fi
Hukm al-Ihtifaal bi’l-Mawlid al-Nabawi, 1/8, 9

Shaykh ‘Abd al-‘Azeez ibn Baaz (may Allaah have
mercy on him) said:

If celebrating the Prophet’s birthday was
prescribed, then the Prophet (peace and blessings
of Allaah be upon him) would have told his ummah
of that, because he is the most sincere of people
and there is no Prophet after him who could explain
anything he did not speak about. He (peace and
blessings of Allaah be upon him) is the Seal of the
Prophets and he explained to the people what he
had to explain of the truth, such as loving him and
following his sharee’ah, sending blessings and
salaams upon him and other rights of his that are
explained in the Qur’aan and Sunnah. He did not
tell his ummah that celebrating the day of his birth
was something prescribed so that they would do
that. He (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon
him) did not do that during his lifetime and his
companions (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon
him) who were the dearest of people to him and the
most knowledgeable of his rights did not celebrate
that day, neither did the Rightly-Guided Caliphs or
any others. Then those who followed them in truth
of the best three generations did not celebrate this
day either.

Do you think that all these people were ignorant of
his rights or fell short with regard to them, until the
later generations came and made up for this
shortfall and made the truth complete? No, by
Allaah. No wise man who understands the nature of
the Sahaabah and how they followed the truth
would say this. If you understand that the
celebration of the Prophet’s birthday was unknown
at the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings of
Allaah be upon him) and the time of his
companions and the time of their earliest followers,
you will realize that it is an innovation that has
been introduced into the faith, and it is not
permissible to do it, approve of it or advocate it,
rather we must denounce it and warn people
against it.

Virtues of Surat Al-Baqarah and Surat Al `Imran

Imam Ahmad said that Abu Nu`aym narrated to them that Bishr bin Muhajir said that `Abdullah bin Buraydah narrated to him from his father, "I was sitting with the Prophet and I heard him say,

(Learn Surat Al-Baqarah, because in learning it there is blessing, in ignoring it there is sorrow, and the sorceresses cannot memorize it.)

He kept silent for a while and then said

(Learn Surat Al-Baqarah and Al `Imran because they are two lights and they shade their people on the Day of Resurrection, just as two clouds, two spaces of shade or two lines of (flying) birds. The Qur'an will meet its companion in the shape of a pale-faced man on the Day of Resurrection when his grave is opened. The Qur'an will ask him, 'Do you know me' The man will say, 'I do not know you.' The Qur'an will say, 'I am your companion, the Qur'an, which has brought you thirst during the heat and made you stay up during the night. Every merchant has his certain trade. But, this Day, you are behind all types of trade.' Kingship will then be given to him in his right hand, eternal life in his left hand and the crown of grace will be placed on his head. His parents will also be granted two garments that the people of this life could never afford. They will say, 'Why were we granted these garments' It will be said, 'Because your son was carrying the Qur'an.' It will be said (to the reader of the Qur'an), 'Read and ascend through the levels of Paradise.' He will go on ascending as long as he recites, whether reciting slowly or quickly.)''

Ibn Majah also recorded part of this Hadith from Bishr bin Al-Muhajir, and this chain of narrators is Hasan, according to the criteria of Imam Muslim.

A part of this Hadith is also supported by other Hadiths. For instance, Imam Ahmad recorded that Abu Umamah Al-Bahili said that he heard the Messenger of Allah say,

(Read the Qur'an, because it will intercede on behalf of its people on the Day of Resurrection. Read the two lights, Al-Baqarah and Al `Imran, because they will come in the shape of two clouds, two shades or two lines of birds on the Day of Resurrection and will argue on behalf of their people on that Day.)

The Prophet then said,

(Read Al-Baqarah, because in having it there is blessing, and in ignoring there is a sorrow and the sorceresses cannot memorize it.)

Also, Imam Muslim narrated this Hadith in the Book of Prayer

Imam Ahmad narrated that An-Nawwas bin Sam`an said that the Prophet said,

On the Day of Resurrection the Qur'an and its people who used to implement it will be brought forth, preceded by Surat Al-Baqarah and Al `Imran.)

An-Nawwas said, "The Prophet set three examples for these two Surahs and I did not forget these examples ever since. He said,

(They will come like two clouds, two dark shades or two lines of birds arguing on behalf of their people.)

It was also recorded in Sahih Muslim and At-Tirmidhi narrated this Hadith, which he rendered Hasan Gharib.

Matters in Which Caution is Required (When Repenting to Allaah)

Matters in Which Caution is Required (When Repenting to Allaah)
By Shaykh Saleem bin ‘Eed al-Hilaalee

1. Persisting in sin

Repentance cannot be valid if it is accompanied by a person’s persistence in sin; this is a transgression which defeats the purpose of repentance.

“And those who, when they have committed Fahishah (illegal sexual intercourse etc.) or wronged themselves with evil, remember Allaah and ask forgiveness for their sins; - and none can forgive sins but Allaah - And do not persist in what (wrong) they have done, while they know.” (Aali Imran 3:135)

2. Failure to learn ones lesson

“They thought there will be no Fitnah (trial or punishment), so they became blind and deaf; after that Allaah turned to them (with Forgiveness) ; yet again many of them became blind and deaf. And Allaah is the All -Seer of what they do.” (Al-Ma’idah 5:71)

“See they not that they are tried once or twice every year (with different kinds of calamities, disease, famine, etc.)? Yet, they turn not in repentance, nor do they learn a lesson (from it).” (At-Tawbah 9:126)

3. Making light of ones sin

The Prophet (sall-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Pay heed to little sins, for they will pile up until they destroy a man, like a man who was in a barren desert, and joined up with other people: each man gathers a little bit of firewood until they had gather enough to make a fire and cook their food on it.” (Reported by Ahmad, 1/402-403, classed hasan by al-Albaanee in Saheeh al-Jami’ al-Saghir, 2684)

4. Impudence in sin

The Prophet (sall-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“Every member of my Ummah is sound except for those who commit sin impudently.” (Reported by al-Bukhaaree and Muslim)

Four Rules of Pure Monotheism

Four Rules of Pure Monotheism

Based on an essay by Shaikh Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahab. © Muslim Answers
Almighty God, Lord of the Glorious Throne, I pray that He may guide you in this world and the next; that He may always bless you; that He may make you one of those who recognize His bounty, who remain firm in face of adversity, and who repent and seek His forgiveness if they disobey or sin. These three characteristics are the indices of felicity and blessedness.

Know that pure worship and monotheism, which is the religion of Abraham, consists of worshipping God alone, of dedicating yourself sincerely to serving Him. God said: "I have not created jinn and men but to worship Me".1 Once you know that God has created you to serve Him, you will realize that there can be no service except with Pure Monotheism (Arabic: Tawhid). Just as there is no formal prayer without purity, and there is no purity with uncleanliness, so there is no worship of God while worshipping others along with Him (Arabic: Shirk).

By associating others with Almighty God, man's worship is spoilt, his deeds are vain and he is doomed to eternal Hellfire. If you are cognizant of all this, you will realize that your most important care should be to have all the knowledge pertinent thereto, that God may save you from Hell's terrible abyss. Almighty God said: "God will not forgive any the association of anything with Him; but He will forgive any lesser offense to whomsoever He chooses".2 Such pertinent knowledge consists of four basic rules, elaborated in Almighty God's Holy Book.

First Rule:
The first rule is the knowledge that the unbelieving pagans whom the Prophet Muhammad, the peace and grace of God be upon him, opposed, did acknowledge that Almighty God - May He be glorified - is indeed the Creator, Provider and Maker of this world. However, this did not make them Muslims. Evidence therefor is in the verse: "Ask them: 'Who sends down for you your provision from the sky and grows it out of the earth? Who hears your prayer and sees your condition? Who brings the living out of the dead and the dead out of the living? Who directs the course of the world?' They will answer: 'God.' Answer: 'Would you then not fulfill your duty to Him?'"3

Second Rule:
The second rule is to know that the unbelievers claim that they do not pray to their objects of worship and call on them except to the end that they may intercede on their behalf with God, as the verse said: "Those who worshipped others as patrons beside God, claiming that they did so only to come through their intercession nearer to Him, will receive the judgment of God in the matter they contend. God will not guide the ingrate, the liar".4 Evidence regarding intercession is in the verse: "They serve beside God beings which can neither benefit nor harm, claiming, 'These are our intercessors with God.'"5

There are two kinds of intercession, one illegitimate and the other legitimate. The former is that which is sought from sources other than God regarding matters where all the power lies in God alone. Evidence for this is-in the verse: "O men who believe, spend of that which We have provided for you before the Day when there will be neither sale nor purchase, neither favors nor intercession. The unbelievers are themselves unjust."6 The legitimate intercession is that which is asked of Almighty God, where the intercessor receives his power from Him, and the interceded for is he whom God is pleased to accept as such for his word and deed. Almighty God said: "No one may intercede with God except by His permission".7

Third Rule:
The third rule is the knowledge that the Prophet Muhammad, may God bless him and give him peace, appeared among people of many religious traditions. Some worshipped angels; others worshipped the prophets and saints of God; others worshipped trees and stones, sun and moon. All of these peoples were fought by him, as they must, relentlessly without distinction. Evidence therefor is in the following Qur'anic verses: "And fight them, that there may be no aberration in religion, and all religion belongs to Almighty God".8

"Day and night, sun and moon, are His creation and sign. Do not worship the sun or the moon, but God, their Creator, if you seek the truth".9 "Almighty God does not command you to take the angels and prophets as Lords".10 "And God said to Jesus, son of Mary: 'Did you ask men to take you and your mother for objects of worship beside Almighty God?' He answered: 'Praise be to You, O God! How can I have asked that which is not mine to ask? If I did, You know it and all that is in my mind. I do not know what is in Your mind, O Transcendent, All- Knowing God! I have not conveyed to them except what You have commanded me to convey, namely, Worship and serve God, my and your only Lord. I was a witness for You in their midst. When You caused me to die, You took over the witnessing on them as well as on all else. If You punish them, they are Your creatures; and if You forgive them, You are the Mighty, the Wise".11

"Those unto whom they pray [i.e., the saints] themselves seek an avenue to their Lord's mercy, compete in coming close to Almighty God, and fear His punishment. Punishment of your Lord is certainly to be shunned".12 "Have you considered al-Lat, al-'Uzza and the third one Manat?13 Are yours the males and His the females? Is this not ridiculous? All of them are but names which you have named, following the example of your ancestors. God gave no voucher for them. You follow but a guess and your own desires".14

Fourth Rule:
The people who associate partners with Almighty God, in both belief and worship, in our own day are worse and hence more guilty than those of pre-Islamic times. For, the ancient ones used to only worship others besides God in prosperity and return to genuine faith in adversity, whereas the present day associationists are constant in their unbelief, regardless of prosperity or adversity. Evidence for this is in the Qur'anic verse: "And when they ride in barks [in stormy seas] they address their prayers to Almighty God in complete sincerity, but relapse into shirk (i.e. associating partners with Him) when they reach the shore".15 May the peace and blessings of Almighty God be upon Muhammad, his Companions and all those who follow him until the Last Day.

Dangling the Arms in Prayer

Dangling the Arms in Prayer

Ash-Shaikh Muhammad bin 'Abdillaah Al-Imaam (may Allaah preserve him)

Question: Is it the Sunnah (practice of the Prophet - sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) to put one hand over the other in prayer or to dangle the arms at one's side?

Answer: The Sunnah is to place the right hand over the left in the prayer. This is due to what was reported by Al-Bukhaaree from Sahl bin Sa'd, who said, "The people (i.e. the companions of the Prophet) were ordered that the man should place his right hand over his left arm in the prayer."

And also there is what Muslim reported from Waa'il bin Hujr, who said, "The Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa aalihi wa sallam) used to place his right hand over his left in the prayer." And there are other evidence besides these as well.

In reference to dangling the arms at one's side (in prayer), there is nothing authentic regarding it.

The Ruling of Female Students Standing for their Instructor

The Ruling of Female Students Standing for their Instructor

Question: What is the ruling of female students standing for the instructor out of respect for her?

Answer: Verily the standing of the girls for the female instructor, and the boys for the male instructor is a matter that is not appropriate, and the least of what is in it is severe dislike, due to the statement of Anas (radhiyallaahu 'anhu - may Allaah be pleased with him): "There was not anyone who was more beloved to them - meaning the companions - than the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam - may Allaah send prayers of blessing and peace upon him), and they would not stand up for him whenever he would enter upon them due to what they knew of his dislike for that."

And also due to the statement of the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam - may Allaah send prayers of blessing and peace upon him), "Whoever likes for men to stand for him, then let him take his seat in the Hell fire."

And the ruling of the women is the ruling of the men in this matter. May Allaah make everyone successful in doing what pleases Him, and may He keep all of us away from the things that anger Him, and His prohibitions. And may He grant everyone the beneficial knowledge, and action that is in accordance with it. Verily He is Generous and Beneficent.

The Ruling of Reciting the Qur'aan into Water

The Ruling of Reciting the Qur'aan into Water

Answered by Ash-Shaikh Rabee' bin Haadee Al-Madkhalee

Question: What is the ruling on reciting the Qur'aan into water?

Answer: It is not appropriate, even though some of the scholars have said it (that it is ok). There is no proof for it. The Messenger ( sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) did not do this and neither did the Companions. May Allaah bless you all.

And those (scholars) who permit writing (i.e. writing verses of the Qur'aan and using them for cure and so forth), and some things, and bathing and washing (with water that have verses of Qur'an blown or recited in it) and the likes of these things, they do not have any proofs for such things.

And they (the same scholars who permitted this) are the ones who taught us that we should not accept any matter except with the daleel (proof). So every person may have his statement accepted or rejected except the Messenger of Allaah ('alayhis-salaatu was-salaam).

The Muftee: Ash-Shaikh Rabee' bin Haadee al-Madkhalee

Who can do Al-Jarh wat-Ta'deel?

Who are refutations to be accepted from? Who has the right to perform Al-Jarh (declaration of unreliability) and At-Ta’deel (affirming someone’s integrity)? Who has the right to make At-Tafseeq (declaring someone an immoral sinner) and At-Tabdee’ (declaring someone an innovator)?

Ash-Shaikh An-Najmee (may Allaah preserve him) said in Al-Fataawaa Al-Jaliyyah, volume 2:

Question 32: Is it permissible for a well-grounded student of knowledge to declare someone an innovator, or declare someone a disbeliever, or is this something specifically reserved for the people of knowledge?

Answer: It is not permissible for the beginning student of knowledge to declare someone an innovator, or declare someone a disbeliever until he is qualified to do that. And he must refer the matter back to the senior (Kibaar) people of knowledge in particular, because Allaah, the Most High, says:

“If only they had referred it to the Messenger or to those charged with authority among them, the proper investigators would have understood it from them (directly).” (An-Nisaa:83)

Question 80: Is it for the beginning student of knowledge to declare men (people) unreliable or affirm people’s integrity (i.e. perform Al-Jarh wat-Ta’deel), and declare people innovators without referring back to an evidence?

Answer: It is not appropriate for the beginning student of knowledge to declare people unreliable (Jarh), or declare people innovators (Tabdee’) from his ownself. However, he must take from the statement of the people of knowledge who are considered (authorities) . And there is no harm in him speaking from one of the scholars if he is sure of their statement in declaring someone unreliable (At-Tajreeh). And Allaah is the Giver of success.

Question 93: What is the specific rule regarding innovation and when is it permissible for me to describe a person with it (i.e. saying so-and-so is an innovator)?

Answer: Firstly, innovation is introducing into the religion what is not from it… (then the Shaikh spoke about innovation and its categories).
Secondly, the matter of describing someone with innovation and boycotting the innovator, this is (for) whoever the scholars declare to be an innovator.

And do not be hasty O you small students, to pass judgment on any person with the declaration of innovation, even if the person has with him an innovation, until you present that back to the scholars and they assist you in that. Without this (referring back to the scholars), then you all do not do anything of that.

And the Shaikh (may Allaah preserve him) said in a phone conversation with him:

Firstly, that the common people and the beginning students of knowledge, it is not appropriate for them to be hasty in passing judgments on others besides them until they refer back to the people of knowledge, who are greater than themselves, and those who know these affairs. Indeed they have dealt with these affairs for a long time.

And the matter is that not everyone who ascribes himself to As-Salafiyyah or he ascribes himself to the people of Hadeeth, then the matter is finished with everything he says being considered right guidance. This statement is not correct, is it not so?

Ash-Shaikh Saalih Al-Fawzaan discusses who is an innovator

Ash-Shaikh Saalih Al-Fawzaan discusses who is an innovator

Ash-Shaikh Saalih Al-Fawzaan (may Allaah preserve him) said in one of his verdicts:

Question 181: Indeed there has appeared between the students of knowledge differing regarding the definition of the innovator. So some of them said: he (the innovator) is whoever said or did an innovation, even if the proof was not presented to him. And from among them are those who said: the proof must be established for him.

And from among them are those who made a difference between the Mujtahid scholar, and others besides him from those who established their principles that are in opposition to the methodology of the People of the Sunnah and the Jamaa’ah. And there has appeared from amongst some of these statements the declaration of Ibn Hajr and An-Nawawee as innovators, and refusing to pray for mercy upon them. We seek from your eminence a clarification regarding this issue, which the discussion about it has increased. May Allaah reward you with good.

Answer:

Firstly, it is not appropriate for the beginning students of knowledge, and others besides them from the common folk, to busy themselves with declaring people innovators (Tabdee’) and declaring people to be immoral sinners (Tafseeq). This is because it is a matter that is dangerous, and they do not have the knowledge and comprehension in this matter. Also, this causes hatred and enmity between them.

Therefore, it is obligatory upon them to busy themselves with seeking knowledge, and restraining their tongues from that which contains no benefit – rather it contains harm for them, and for others besides them as well.

Secondly, innovation (Al-Bid’ah) is what has been introduced into the religion from what was not from it. This is due to the statement of the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam – may prayers of blessing and peace be upon him), “Whoever introduces into this matter of ours what is not from it, then it is rejected.” [Reported by Al-Imaam Al-Bukhaaree in his Saheeh (3/167) from a narration on the authority of ‘Aa’ishah – may Allaah be pleased with her].

And if a person did something that is in opposition to the religion due to his ignorance (he simply did not know), then verily he is to be excused because of his ignorance, and he is not to be ruled an innovator (Mubtadi’). However, his action is (still) considered an innovation.

Thirdly, whoever has some mistakes in matters of Ijtihaad (scholarly deduction), which some others besides him made interpretation concerning – like Ibn Hajr and An-Nawawee, and what occurred from them of interpreting some of the Attributes of Allaah – then that person is not to be ruled as an innovator. Rather, it should be said: This which occurred from them is a mistake, and it is hoped that they will be forgiven due to what they brought forth of tremendous service for the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam – may prayers of blessing and peace be upon him). So they are two great Imaams, who are reliable according to the people of knowledge.

What Is The Order in Which the Books Of Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahaab Should be Memorised?

What Is The Order in Which the Books Of Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahaab
Should be Memorized? By:Shaikh Ahmed Najmee
------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- -

Question:

"O Shaykh is there a certain order in which the books authored by
Muhammad ibn `Abdul Wahhaab should be memorized like the books
Thalaathatul- Usool, and Usool-us-Sitta, and Qawaa'id-ul- Arbaa', and
Masaa'ill-ul- Jaahiliyyah, and Nawaaqid-ul- Islaam, and Kitaab-ut-
Tawheed, and Kashf-ush-Shubahaat ; We hope from you O Eminent Shaykh
that you can place a order for us to memorize these texts (body of
the book)?"

Firstly: Memorization requires will power and determination.

Secondly: Memorization requires constant reading.

Thirdly: Memorization starts with the small books then that which
is higher than that.

Fourthly: The one trying to memorize must be extreme in making
du'aa (calling on Allaah) asking Him to facilitate the affair for
him, and with that one will reach his aim, Inshallaah and he will
only achieve what Allaah has written for him.
